Ever wondered why our parents’ generation lived a happier, more connected life?
I am not saying that people in today’s world are self-obsessed, selfish, depressed, dopamine-chasing zombies… but if I did say it, would I be entirely wrong?
A few days ago, I was talking to my cousin. Cool guy. Doesn’t even have Wi-Fi at home — not because he can’t afford it, but because he just doesn’t feel the need. (I know. Shocking.)
We are too involved in staying indoors, being busy with our devices, that we have stopped taking an interest in other people’s lives.
The sad thing is that today’s youth thinks it’s funny if a relative or loved one asks them about their lives, grades, and future plans.
I agree that relatives can be a pain in the ass at times, but not all of them!
We’re wired to connect. We’re human. We like talking, sharing, being heard – even if we pretend we don’t.
If we stop doing that, will we stay happy?
I ran a weird experiment on myself the other day.
I didn’t talk much to anyone for 24 hours (my colleagues, family or anyone else). And let me tell you, I love talking (ahem….I am an ambivert)
No one noticed
That stung a little. It hit me that people have genuinely stopped caring. (Add me to that list, too. I’m guilty.)
We are so busy in our day-to-day lives that we consider it irritating to talk to others, even if it’s for just five minutes.
We can easily spend hours binge-watching, but we struggle to make a small conversation.
Well, because it’s the new norm. To not talk!
You can be rich. Like really rich.
And still feel empty. Anxious. Lost.
Because what makes you happy isn’t just money; it’s your ability to love others and accept them.
It’s in the tiny, unfiltered things.
Like checking in on a friend without a reason.
Smiling at a stranger without overthinking it.
Complimenting that girl/ boy you’ve got a crush on.
Or just sitting with someone, not fixing anything, just being.
When you bestow your love, care, and kindness to others (including strangers), you will feel the utmost sense of happiness gripping your heart, spreading around your body and creating an aura of positivity around you!
And your self-esteem? It’ll blow off the roof (take that depression)
You will be more thankful for everything that’s in your life and stretch towards an optimistic lifestyle.
Also, did I share? You have a better chance of missing a heart attack if you stay optimistic.
I read somewhere (or maybe I made it up, I can’t remember)
Positivity invites happiness. Negativity invites headaches.
Maybe it’s not poetic, but well, it’s a universal truth.
The people in your life, your life choices, decisions, your confidence, self-esteem, and everything else depend on all of this!
So go ahead, pick people. Pick presence. Pick the kind of life you won’t have to scroll back to find meaning in.
Make a choice that you feel is worth it!
I know this write-up of mine might not be that interesting or that inspiring, but it speaks the valuable truth about Happiness.
And if it made you pause and think, even for a second…
Then I’m glad I wrote it.
See you in the next one. Or maybe I won’t.
But I hope you smile anyway. 🙂
